Week 7: Imagery Using Metaphors and Similes

Week 7: Imagery Using Metaphors and Similes

This week Juliet gave a presentation on what people wore during Shakespeare’s time.  Roderigo gave us the vocabulary word which was "couch" which means “to go to sleep”.  We read Act III Scene 3.  We learned about metaphors and similes.

What is a metaphor?

“met·a·phor (noun)

a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.

-Online Dictionary

“A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn't literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison. Here are the basics: A metaphor states that one thing is another thing.

Here are the basics:

1.            A metaphor states that one thing is another thing

2.            It equates those two things not because they actually are the same, but for the sake of comparison or symbolism

3.            If you take a metaphor literally, it will probably sound very strange (are there actually any sheep, black or otherwise, in your family?

4.            Metaphors are used in poetry, literature, and anytime someone wants to add some color to their language”

Example:

I’m a night owl.

What is a simile?

“sim·i·le (noun)

a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g., as brave as a lion, crazy like a fox ).”

-Online Dictionary

“Let’s use this example to understand what a simile is:

A simile is a phrase that uses a comparison to describe. For example, “life” can be described as similar to “a box of chocolates.”

You know you’ve spotted one when you see the words like or as in a comparison.

Similes are like metaphors. But metaphors aren’t the same as similes.”
